The August Gardening Guide with KSB Greenhouse

The August Gardening Guide with KSB Greenhouse

Hello, fellow green thumbs and garden enthusiasts! August is here, and with it comes the warmth of summer at its peak and a garden teeming with life and potential. As your gardening experts at KSB Greenhouse, we are here to guide you through this fascinating period.

August is traditionally one of the hottest months, which means that watering is of utmost importance. Remember to use grey water wherever possible. It's a wonderful way to conserve water, especially if your water butts are running low due to a dry summer. If you're off on a holiday, make sure you've got trusted friends or family ready to step in and keep your garden thriving.

  • The Blooming Beauties of August
Apart from radiant sunflowers, August also ushers in sweet peas and hardy buddleias, which bloom beautifully and attract bees and butterflies. Although sweet peas may not have been very productive this year, buddleias are known for their resilience and ability to grow even through stone or concrete. And in your rich garden soil? They'll be more than happy!

  • The Ideal Veggie Planting
When it comes to vegetables, August is an excellent time to plant cucumbers, beets, beans, and leafy greens such as lettuces, spinach, and kale. If you're located in a cooler northern climate, go ahead and plant a last round of spinach, carrots, or sugar snap peas. They'll be ready to harvest come fall or even into winter.

  • The Perfect Greenhouse Temperature

Inside your KSB Greenhouse, you should aim for 75-85°F during the day and 60-76°F at night. Keeping this temperature range ensures your plants grow in the best possible conditions, mirroring the great outdoors while giving them a protective shield from extreme weather.

  • Time to Divide and Conquer

August is a prime time to dig up and divide your perennial flowers like hostas, Oriental poppies, lilies, daylilies, ornamental grasses, and bearded irises. Be gentle with the root ball while doing this to ensure minimal damage and maximal growth in the future.

  • Fertilizer Friend or Foe?
For northern gardeners, now is the time to stop feeding roses, trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers. Late summer feeding can lead to new growth that likely won't survive the winter. By limiting nutrients now, your plants will toughen up before the first frost. Southern gardeners, however, can keep fertilizing to promote flowering through late autumn.

  • Storing the Sturdy
Both potatoes and onions have long shelf lives when stored in temperatures between 35 and 45 degrees F. So don't worry about an abundance of these root veggies; store them properly and they'll stay fresh for a good long while.

  • Plant Tag Protectors

Remember to store your plant tags in a safe place so that you'll be able to identify your perennials come spring.
